How to apply to Claude for Startups: $1,000 credits, eligibility, and rejections

9 min read#claude#anthropic#startup-credits#claude-team#ai-tools

Who this is forEarly-stage founders and solo business owners trying to lower Claude API or Claude Team costs, including people who got a rejection email after applying.

TL;DR: Once approved for Claude for Startups, which Anthropic expanded on October 6, 2026, you get $1,000 in Claude API credits, one year of Claude Team free (for organizations using Team for the first time, up to 5 premium seats), and partner benefits worth up to $45,000. Companies founded within the past 5 years or that raised funding in the past 2 years are eligible, and you can apply without any funding. However, many applicants get a rejection email within minutes. Build and Light applied four times, changing what the form allowed each time, and was rejected every time with the same notice. A company email and website are official requirements, so get them ready first, but having them does not guarantee approval.

4. Rejection cases and what to check before applying

The official rejection reasons have not been published. The rejection email is a standard notice that applications are declined when the company is outside eligibility or can’t be verified. Here is what I found after collecting about 40 application reports posted on Reddit and Threads on October 6–7:

  • Most approved people applied with a company domain email.
  • There were approvals for companies without funding, one-person companies, companies with no revenue, companies founded this year, and South Korean sole proprietors (individual business owners registered with the tax office).
  • Many people were rejected within minutes three to five times in a row under the same conditions.
  • Applications from personal email such as gmail were rejected for a clear reason (a company domain email is a required item).
  • I found no cases where reapplying turned a rejection into an approval.

Tips like “writing in English gets you in” and “detailed text boxes get you in” are going around, but they are anecdotes with no confirmed basis.

5. The four rejections Build and Light received

On October 7, 2026, Build and Light applied four times in one day using its company domain email, and all four were rejected.

Attempt What was submitted Result
1st Console organization name left as the personal-organization default; LinkedIn field left blank Rejection email at 09:33 KST
2nd Switched the organization to Team and entered the company name; added LinkedIn; showed an about page and the business registration number in the site footer Rejection email at 15:24 KST
3rd Moved mail to Google Workspace and set up SPF and DMARC; applied from a new Console account created with a personal-name address Rejection email at 16:46 KST
4th Applied under the GGPLab business opened in 2023; used an older domain registered in September 2025 and its email; showed business information on the site; new Console account and GGPLab organization Rejection email at 17:26 KST
  • Result emails arrived 2 to 10 minutes after each submission, and all four used the same notice.
  • A personal organization (“Name’s Individual Org”) has a locked name field, so you had to “switch to Team” before you could change it to the company name.
  • The rejection email is a single standard notice that combines two reasons. It says the program is for startups founded within the past 5 years or with funding within the past 2 years, and that applications are declined if they fall outside that scope or if the company can’t be verified from the application information. It included a reapply link.
  • Both businesses were founded within the eligible window (June 2026 and January 2023), so I think company verification was the problem, but that is a guess. The idea that the rejection was automatic is also a guess, based on the emails arriving within minutes.

6. Testing the differences I suspected

I changed several conditions at once in each attempt. So each row means that the condition alone did not get approval; it does not prove that the condition is not the cause.

Hypothesis What I changed Result
No Workspace mailbox Moved mail to Google Workspace and set up SPF and DMARC; DKIM not set up (3rd attempt) Rejected
Rejection results carried over in the account and organization New Console account with a personal-name address and a new organization (3rd and 4th attempts) Rejected
Role address like contact@ Applied with a personal-name address (3rd attempt) Rejected
Personal organization name Switched to Team and entered the company name (2nd attempt) Rejected
Business history too short Applied under a sole proprietorship opened in 2023 (4th attempt) Rejected
Domain newly registered Applied with a domain registered in September 2025 (4th attempt) Rejected. Still shorter than the approved acquaintance’s domain (1 year 7 months)

Three things stayed the same across all four applications:

  • The same applicant (name and LinkedIn)
  • A South Korean sole proprietor (individual business owner)
  • The same connection environment

Payment history was not a difference, since the approved acquaintance had none either. Domain age was still shorter than the acquaintance’s even in the 4th attempt, so I could not rule it out. I don’t know which of these is the cause, or whether there is a different one.

I also couldn’t find a way to ask a human.

  • On support.claude.com, a bot answered and said there is no human support on the free plan.
  • I emailed the startup program address the bot gave me, and it bounced back with “Address not found.”

We stopped applying here. Even after changing everything the form allows, the result may stay the same, and I found no community reports of reapplication leading to approval.

7. Frequently asked questions

Can I apply if I haven’t raised any funding?

Yes. The official page says bootstrapped (self-funded) companies and pre-seed companies are eligible too. If the company was founded within the past 5 years, you can apply regardless of funding status.

When do the results come?

Most come by email within a few minutes. If the application goes to manual review, it takes 2 to 3 business days.

I use Claude through Bedrock or Vertex AI. Can I use the credits?

No. The official page says the credits only apply to Anthropic’s own Claude API in the Console and cannot be used on third-party platforms such as AWS Bedrock or Google Cloud Vertex AI.

What if I already use Claude Team?

You won’t get the free year of Team. The official page says this benefit is only for organizations using Team for the first time. Features used on paid plans such as Team are collected in Claude terms explained.

How long can I use the credits?

They expire six months after the grant date.

Do I need to apply again if I’m already a program member?

No. The official page says companies that are already members don’t need to reapply.
